Welcome to English 3! Your junior year of high school is an extremely important and challenging one. Becoming better writers and researchers is one of our primary goals this year; considering this, we will be working a great deal on formal essay writing. Throughout the year we will be analyzing and working with a variety of literature, poetry, and non-fiction selections while also studying vocabulary and grammar in preparation for the English Regents exam on January 21st.
The major works of literature that we may read include [but are not limited to]:
The Great Gatsby - a Jazz Age novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Tuesdays with Morrie - a memoir by Mitch Albom
The Taming of the Shrew - a comedy play by William Shakespeare
Selected memoirs, full-length non-fiction works, speeches, films, poems, photographs,
advertisements, essays, and articles
All of these works address the overarching themes of the literature of English 3: identity, conformity, rebellion, morality, and conscience. This course's major works of literature will guide our curriculum to help us achieve a greater understanding of these themes and how they apply to our lives and the world in general.
It is our hope that you will take an active interest in the work we do in class. We look forward to a successful year!
